Kodaikanal is a famous hill station in Tamil Nadu, often called the “Princess of Hill Stations,” known for its misty mountains, serene lakes, and lush greenery. Kodaikanal is nestled in the Palani Hills of the Western Ghats, in the Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu, India. It lies at an elevation of about 2,133 meters (6,998 feet) above sea level, giving it a cool and misty climate year-round and is a popular retreat for nature lovers and honeymooners.

The town’s history dates back to 1845, when American missionaries and British civil servants established it as a summer retreat.

The name “Kodaikanal” comes from the Tamil words Kodai (summer) and Kanal (to see), meaning “a place to see in summer.”

Rich cultural roots, with early references in Tamil Sangam literature and the Palaiyar tribal people as its earliest inhabitants.

Today, Kodaikanal flourishes as a popular tourist destination, celebrated for its scenic landscapes, pleasant climate, and thriving hospitality sector.

It has grown into a charming hill station with a population of about 36,500 people (as per the 2011 census). The primary languages spoken here are Tamil and English, making it accessible to both locals and visitors.

Kodaikanal’s climate is one of its biggest attractions, with an average summer temperature of 19.8 °C and annual rainfall of about 1,650 mm, ensuring lush greenery and misty landscapes that captivate travelers year-round.
